The past couple of weeks we have been learning all about basic needs for living things, including animals and people. We have talked about how birds need food to survive and sometimes humans can help them out by providing them food. We made bird feeders today using different types of recycled materials. The kids had so much fun. They could use water bottles, plates, milk jugs, toilet/paper towel rolls. They were able to use sunflower butter, cheerios, and bird seed as food for the birds. It was so much fun to see how creative the kiddos got with the bird feeders. Check out some pictures that we took!

It's so great to be back with the kiddos! I hope that you all enjoyed the time that you had with your kids. They all enjoyed hearing what each other was up to during fall break. There was definitely a lot of chatter going on yesterday because they were all so excited to see each other!
This week we started Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop. Reader's Workshop is at time when we will focus on becoming better readers! Students will learn a new reading skill and then go off on their own with their book boxes and use that new skill while reading their books. Writer's Workshop is a time when they will learn how to be better writer's! We will learn something together about writing and then they will go practice it while writing on their own. They have been so excited about it the past 2 days and I can't wait to see how it helps them to grow as readers and writers. We also started Daily 5 this week. The Daily 5 centers that we are doing in our classroom are Read to Self, Listening Center, Technology, Word Work, and Writing. They go to 2 centers a day so that by the end of the week, they will have gone to every center twice. They have loved doing Reading a-z on the computers/iPads. They also are really enjoying the Listening Center where they listen to books being read to them on CD. I love how the kids just get very happy about anything new that we do in the classroom. I'm looking forward to this 2nd Quarter with your kids! Last week, we learned all about the most popular food and sport in Italy. We learned that soccer is very popular in Italy so the kiddos made their own soccer balls. Pizza is very popular in Italy so we made our own pizzas.
Yesterday in class, we watched an Intro video of Italy. We learned about where Italy is located on the map and what their flag looks like. The students then decorated their own Italian flags! This was their first time to use this type of paint where they have to first dip the brush into the water and they did great! Global Citizen's Night is less than two weeks away! This week we are going to start learning all about Italy--Kindergarten's country. We will be doing a bunch of different art projects to help the kiddos to get excited about this country. There will be something different that they are doing everyday. Make sure to check out this page to see all the fun stuff that they will be doing!
